The Disciplinary Council (CD) of the FPF rejected this Monday, March 16, the appeal presented by Benfica coach, José Mourinho, against the punishments applied following the reception to FC Porto (2-2), in the 25th round of the Football League.
“(…) The members of the Disciplinary Council agree (…) to judge this inappropriate hierarchical appeal as completely unfounded, and, consequently, to maintain the disciplinary decisions”, reads the ruling of the CD of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) released today, and to which the Lusa agency had access.
According to the FPF CD, Mourinho, who filed the appeal on Friday, “deliberately left the technical area, running towards the substitutes bench” at FC Porto and “kicked a ball that was in the throw-in cone, towards the bench”.
“Following what was described (…), a general altercation occurred between members of the reserve benches of the two teams, with the main referee [João Pinheiro] shown a red card to the appellant [Mourinho]and ordered his expulsion”, he maintains.
The FPF CD also indicates that, around 90+2 minutes into the match, Mourinho “addressed” FC Porto assistant coach Lucho González, at the entrance to the access tunnel to the changing rooms, “making a gesture with his index finger approaching and hitting his thumb and repeating several times ‘you’re little’”, with the member of the Porto team “replied ‘you’re a traitor’, which provoked an altercation between various elements that tried to separate the so-called sports agents”.
“Facts proven, the appellant (…) acted freely, consciously and voluntarily, knowing well that the behaviors he adopted were likely to cause conflict between those involved in the game and to reach the consideration of the sports agent to whom he directed the aforementioned expressions and gestures, even so, he did not refrain from practicing them”, he highlights.
Therefore, the suspension of one game and the fine of 1,530 euros related to the expulsion remain valid, as well as the sanction of 11 days of suspension and the fine of 3,825 euros for injury to honor, reputation and slanderous report.
The disciplinary body also determined that the costs of the process will be borne by Mourinho, setting the disciplinary fee in three units of account, corresponding to 306 euros.
José Mourinho missed the game between Benfica and Arouca (2-1) on Saturday, after the FPF CD refused the suspensive effect of the appeal to the punishment that was applied to him, a source close to the process told Lusa
After being sent off at the reception against FC Porto, coach José Mourinho was suspended for one game, a punishment to which 11 days of suspension were added, for having had a disagreement with Lucho González, assistant of the ‘dragons’, who was also punished with one game and eight days.
The FPF CD accepted the appeal presented by Mourinho, but did not attribute a suspensive effect, which prevented the coach from leading the team on the visit to Arouca, for the 26th round of the I League.
