Google is planning a major improvement to the Always-on Display feature on its Pixel smartphones. This innovation is intended to allow users to automatically turn off the display when no user activity is detected in order to extend battery life. While many Android devices already have always-on display features, their settings vary widely. Pixel users previously only had the option of either permanently turning the display on or off.
The new feature, spotted in a recently released Android Canary version, suggests that Google is working on an option that turns off the display when inactive. This feature could be found under Settings > Display > Always-on Display, but is not yet active in the current Canary version. Android’s internal code indicating this feature uses the term “Doze” as the internal codename for the ambient display.
A comparison with Samsung’s implementation shows that their devices automatically deactivate the always-on display when the phone is lying face down, in a dark environment or the user is sleeping. Whether Google will use similar triggers remains to be seen, but it is likely that the approaches will be comparable.
The introduction of this feature could be a step towards a more personalized and energy-efficient use of Pixel smartphones. It will be particularly interesting to see whether this innovation will also be made available for older Pixel models or whether it will remain exclusive to the latest devices. The ability to customize the always-on display could significantly improve the user experience and extend the battery life of devices.
