The Government approved a plan for the conservation and sustainability of pollinating insects in Portugal, with financing from the Environmental Fund, said, in a statement released this Saturday, April 4, the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
This program “hosts a high density of pollinators, with 746 species of bees, 148 of diurnal butterflies, more than 2,600 nocturnal butterflies and 221 species of syrphids [conhecidos como moscas-das-flores]among other groups”.
The plan was developed within the scope of the Polinização project and in conjunction with the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF)involving experts, public and private entities, members of the poli.net network and citizens.
Based on four axes, the plan focuses on “strengthening scientific knowledge and monitoring, promoting sustainable territorial management practices, mobilizing society through education and communication and integrating pollinator conservation into public policies”, he said in the same note.
The Environmental Fund will make two million euros available in 2026 and 2027 for initiatives such as monitoring pollinators, restoring favorable habitats, scientific training and promoting good practices in the country.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, noted that pollinators “are essential for biodiversity and the balance” of ecosystems, according to the statement.
“With this plan, we reinforce scientific knowledge, mobilize society and create conditions to protect these species and guarantee more resilient landscapes for the future”, he added.
