In the border area of Santa Teresa, near Ciudad Juárez, the landscape has begun to change aggressively. The new section of wall built by the United States presents a tactical innovation that is as subtle as it is dangerous: a metallic finish painted matte black, designed specifically to absorb solar radiation and make it physically difficult for migrants to cross.
A THERMAL BARRIER: THE DESIGN BEHIND THE BLACK WALL
Unlike the rusty steel fences of the past, this new section is part of the project promoted by the Donald Trump administration, with an estimated investment of 4.5 billion dollars.
The choice of matte black color is not aesthetic. According to experts, this material is designed to raise its temperature with direct exposure to the sun, becoming a burning surface that makes it difficult or impossible for a person to hold on to climb.
Key data of the border project:
- Total extension: Approximately 230 miles of barrier.
- Critical zone: 110 kilometers are strategically located between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.

“WHY DOES IT NOT WORK?”: THE VOICE OF THE CHURCH AND ACTIVISTS
In an interview for the EFE agency, the religious Javier Calvillo, a key figure in assisting migrants in the region, pointed out that these physical barriers, no matter how technological or “hot” they are, will not stop the migratory phenomenon.
“The more difficult you make your wall or your fences, the more you affect migration, you make it more complicated, and in any case, even if the migrant puts up this wall, it will continue to happen,” said Calvillo.
The priest recalled that Ciudad Juárez has already survived extreme crises, such as the restrictions of Title 42 or the “Stay in Mexico” program (MPP). Instead of stemming the flow, these measures have only caused migrants to remain stuck in border cities for long periods or seek alternative, much more dangerous routes.
THE HUMAN COST OF BORDER HARDENING
Although Calvillo recognizes the right of each country to protect its sovereignty, he warns that the current approach ignores the human need for survival. Hardening the border does not eliminate the cause of migration, it only increases the lethality of the journey.
Consequences of the new wall:
- Increased physical risk: The thermal design can cause serious burns or falls from great heights.
- Remote routes: By blocking urban areas like El Paso-Juárez, migrants are pushed into the open desert.
- Human persistence: As the religious points out, “human beings will always think bigger, despite the walls.”
Construction continues to move forward, marking a new era in border policing where weather and materials are used as deterrence tools at one of the world’s busiest borders.
