Lionel Messi reached a historic milestone in his career by reaching 900 goals as a professional on a bittersweet night for Inter Miami CF. The feat was achieved in a 1-1 draw against Nashville SC, a result that resulted in the elimination of the North American team in the round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, after a zero score in the first leg and with the away goals rule deciding the tie.
Messi, 38, opened the scoring after just seven minutes with a cross shot, scoring his 900th goal in 1,142 official games. However, the advantage was not enough to guarantee qualification, as Cristian Espinoza restored equality in the 74th minute, guaranteeing the passage of the team coached by Hany Mukhtar.
Throughout his career, Messi scored the overwhelming majority of his goals for FC Barcelona, where he scored 672 times during 17 seasons with the first team. To these numbers are added 32 goals for Paris Saint-Germain, 81 for Inter Miami and 115 for the Argentina national team.. The Argentine’s first senior goal dates back to 2005, when, at the age of 17, he scored for Barcelona against Albacete.
Considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, Messi has won eight Ballon d’Ors (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023), maintaining a historic rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, who scores 965 goals and continues to work for Al Nassr and the Portuguese national team, chasing the symbolic mark of a thousand goals.
With a renewed contract with Inter Miami until the end of the decade, Messi should continue to increase his numbers and is expected to participate in the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina will defend the title won in 2022.
