Montezuma, NY – A devastating fire destroyed the home of a Cayuga County EMT and her family on Thursday.
The fire broke out around 11:45 a.m. on East Loop Road in Montezuma, according to the Seneca Falls Fire Department. According to dispatchers at the Cayuga County 911 Center, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the home when firefighters arrived.
Severe fire conditions and cold winds prompted a lot of mutual aid from departments across Cayuga and Seneca counties. Fire departments from Montezuma, Cayuga, Clyde, Seneca Falls, Owasco, Port Byron, Jordan, Throop, Savannah, Union Springs and Aurelius responded along with Jordan Ambulance.
The Montezuma Fire Department re-released a report from a local resident on Friday, saying no people or animals were injured. However, the house appears to be a total loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Janet Snyder, one of the affected family members, is a paramedic with the Montezuma Fire Department, which also assists many neighboring departments, according to the department.
“Janet is one of the most dedicated people I have ever met when it comes to helping her community and friends and she never asks for anything in return,” the department said on Facebook.
The department is asking community members to support Snyder and her family during this time of need.
Monetary donations can be made out to the Snyder family and dropped off at the Montezuma Fire Department or mailed to PO Box 457, Montezuma, NY 13117.
