The secretary general of the PSD, Hugo Soares, stated this Saturday (28) that the threat of storms made by the PT member “is talk for fans” and assured that the Government will continue dialoguing with all parties with parliamentary representation.
“I think this is crowd talk. Honestly, it’s typical of a party congress”, he told the Lusa agency, in Cabeceiras de Basto, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new PSD council, led by Laura Magalhães.
Hugo Soares recalled that the Portuguese “chose a Parliament with three majority blocs” and added that the Government will continue on its path, “respecting the will of the Portuguese, which is dialoguing with all those who have parliamentary representation”.
“This is the fulfillment of democracy,” said the Social Democratic parliamentary leader.
On Friday, the secretary general of the PS demanded that the AD “make a decision” and clarify whether it wants “moderate convergence” with the PS or agreements with Chega, warning that he will say a “resound no” to attempts to unbalance the Constitutional Court.
“It’s time for us to demand that the AD make a decision”, challenged José Luís Carneiro during his first speech at the 25th National Congress of the PS, in Viseu, warning that, “if the Government chooses winds, it will have storms”.
In the same speech, the socialist leader put forward four proposals to help face the effects of the conflict in the Middle East: zero VAT on essential food products, a reduction from 23% to 13% in VAT on fuel and gas, the doubling of energy consumption taxed at 6% and exemption from ISP on diesel for agriculture.
Hugo Soares immediately criticized zero VAT, considering that “it is a blind measure” and “highly unfair, because it will benefit everyone equally and not everyone needs it in the same way”.
“And the Portuguese State is not a State with unlimited resources and, therefore, policies must be directed to those who need it and the Government is certainly paying attention”, he said.
He highlighted that the government has been announcing “constantly and from the outset” measures, specifically related to fuel and gas and “will also be paying attention to the price of food”.
Regarding the announcement by Chega’s leader that he will move forward, by the end of the year, with a proposal to revise the Constitution, Hugo Soares did not say whether the PSD will take the same initiative.
“Everything in its own time. Now it’s time to continue governing and transforming people’s lives. If any party presents a proposal for constitutional revision, we will be there to analyze it.”
Hugo Soares also declined to comment on the choice of judges for the Constitutional Court, highlighting that the process is “in the modest way it should be”.
“I have never spoken publicly about this matter, nor will I do so now”, he concluded.
