The airline Iberia will lay off nearly a thousand workers, according to an agreement signed between the company and unions that provides for all departures to be voluntary, the two parties announced this Monday, March 30th.
The agreement defines the terms of a termination process that should cover 996 of Iberia’s approximately 10,700 workers, according to sources cited by Spanish media.
106 pilots, 137 passenger flight crew and 753 ground workers (maintenance technicians and service personnel) are expected to leave, union and company sources said.
The agreement includes pre-retirements and other departures from the company for people under 60 years of age.
Ground workers who are 60 years old by December 31, 2026, as well as crew members aged 58 and over, will be able to join the pre-retirements.
Among other conditions, people who go through pre-retirement will receive 80% of their current gross salary, while the rest will receive the equivalent of 35 days for each year of work.
Iberia, which is part of the IAG group, which also controls British Airways, justified the dismissal of these workers with the need to optimize the company’s organization in Madrid due to market changes.
