Iberian Summit Condemns Iran Attacks, Silences US Action

The final declaration of the 36th Portuguese-Spanish Summit condemns “Iran’s indiscriminate and unjustified attacks against the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and other countries in the region”, without reference to the initial attack by the United States.

In the declaration, released at the end of the meeting between the two countries and after the press conference by Prime Ministers Luís Montenegro and Pedro Sánchez, the two countries begin by reiterating “their commitment to peace and stability in the region and reaffirm the need for full respect for International Law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter and International Humanitarian Law”.

Both sides condemn Iran’s indiscriminate and unjustified attacks against the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and other countries in the region,” refers.

At the same time, Portugal and Spain “insist on an immediate ‘de-escalation’ and a return to dialogue and diplomacy, the only way to achieve a lasting solution to all outstanding issues with Iran”.

“Portugal and Spain are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of their citizens in the region and help them return”also refers to the document on this conflict, in which there is no reference to the United States of America.

Sánchez has condemned the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, having refused the use of military bases on Spanish territory by the Americans for these operations. In response, US President Donald Trump threatened Spain with reprisals.

Luís Montenegro has stated that “Portugal did not follow, did not subscribe and was not involved in this military action”, but highlighted that the country is closer to its North American ally than to Iran.
