Transforming music into a welcome, a support network and learning to sing: this is Coro Travessia, created by two Brazilian immigrants who live in Portugal. Madu and Heber Novais teach, every Monday, how to sing, on a sound journey to the other side of the Atlantic.
Classes take place at Fábrica Braço de Prata, every Monday, within the weekly schedule “Segunda Baderna”. Anyone can participate, as it is a Brazilian music project open to all nationalities. “We know that here in Portugal there is a large community of Brazilian people, but the idea of Travessia is not to create a choir of Brazilian people, but rather a choir that worships Brazilian music”, he tells DN Brazil Professor Heber Novais.
According to the immigrant, people of different nationalities have already participated in the initiative. The focus of the songs is on northeastern rhythms. “Within the choir, which is Brazilian, we focus on music from the Northeast of Brazil, which is so multicultural. We explore this universe of the Northeast, understanding the rhythms and different musicalities”, singer Madu highlights to the newspaper.

Classes last 1h30, from 7:30pm to 9pm. “We were very happy to have the Fábrica space as our residence, and we are there every Monday. We mix movement, singing and classes“, highlights the Brazilian artist. Among the project’s plans is a performance by the choir.
People interested in participating can contact us via Instagram of Coro Travessia or attend a class. People in socially vulnerable situations can participate for free, while others pay a monthly fee of 50 euros.
