There are more older women than men in Mexico

Inapam calls this phenomenon “feminization of aging,” and It goes beyond the birth rate or the health system, as it is related to accidents, cases of violence and diseases that contribute to a higher mortality rate among adult men.

Likewise, Inapam declared that The life expectancy of women is greater than that of men due to biological factors.

In which States are there more elderly people?

According to the National Population Council (Conapo), Mexico City and the State of Mexico are two of the entities with the greatest aging in the country. On the other hand, it also reported that 27 states are in a moderate or advanced stage of demographic aging. Likewise, Veracruz and Morelos are two other entities that present more pronounced aging.

Why has the population of older adults in Mexico increased?

According to Inapam, There are at least four factors that influence the increase in the median age of Mexicans. Among the main demographic phenomena that increase the aging rate are:

  • Increase in life expectancy of Mexicans.
  • Reduction of pregnancies and mortality.
  • Migration of Mexican youth.
