In Germany, parked sidewalks are a widespread problem that significantly restricts the mobility of many people. People in wheelchairs or with strollers, who are often forced to move onto the street, are particularly affected. To counteract this situation, the ecological traffic club VCD launched the “Free Sidewalks” campaign. This initiative allows citizens to use an online form to report locations where sidewalks are regularly blocked by parked vehicles.
The VCD, based in Berlin, plans to publish the collected data in the form of an online map. This map is intended to visualize the problem areas and serve as a basis for political measures. Michael Müller-Görnert, the VCD’s transport policy spokesman, emphasizes that every report helps to put pressure on the municipalities and ensure safe routes for everyone.
According to the Road Traffic Act (StVO), parking on sidewalks is only permitted in exceptional cases. Nevertheless, in many places, sidewalks are parked illegally, which limits the mobility of many people. The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig ruled in the summer of 2024 that municipalities are obliged to take measures if there is insufficient space on sidewalks. This decision underlines the need to take the problem of parked sidewalks seriously.
As a non-profit environmental association, the VCD is committed to climate-friendly, safe and healthy mobility approaches. With the “Free Walkways” initiative, the association is setting another example towards sustainable urban development. The campaign is intended not only to point out existing grievances, but also to serve as a starting point for political measures that improve mobility and security in urban areas.
