Active Surfaces, an innovative solar energy startup, has won the first PITCH.nano competition hosted by MIT.nano. The company impressed with its ultra-light, flexible solar cells that generate energy directly where it is needed. This technology could revolutionize the way photovoltaics are used in the built environment.

CEO and co-founder Shiv Bhakta presented the technology to an audience of entrepreneurs, investors and industry partners. Winning 25,000 nanoBucks gives Active Surfaces access to MIT.nano’s state-of-the-art facilities, which should significantly accelerate the development of their prototypes.

Vladimir Bulović, the faculty director of MIT.nano, emphasized the importance of the university’s support of startups. He explained that connecting open tools with the needs of startups is crucial to ease the early years of company development and get more companies to scale.

START.nano, the program behind the competition, offers startups discounted access to clean rooms and laboratories to develop prototypes and attract investment. The PITCH.nano event was created to connect these companies with the investor and industry community.

The participating startups covered a wide range of topics, including climate, energy, materials, life sciences and quantum photonics. Active Surfaces stood out with its innovative solution that has the potential to have a lasting impact on the solar energy industry.
