Iran threatens retaliation if Kharg is attacked. Tension rises in the Persian Gulf

This Saturday, March 14, Iran threatened to attack the oil and gas infrastructure of companies that cooperate with the US in the region if Donald Trump orders an attack on Iranian oil installations on the island of Kharg.

Trump has already revealed that US forces carried out an air attack on Friday on the small Iranian island in the north of the Persian Gulf, but focused on military targets.

However, the US President did not rule out the possibility of action against Iran’s oil infrastructure in Kharg. It even threatened to advance if Iran blocks the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

The island of Kharg is of crucial importance for Iran. Despite its small size (about eight kilometers long), is the export terminal for 90% of Iran’s oil shipments. The island’s infrastructure has the capacity to load around seven million barrels per day. In the territory, up to ten supertankers can also dock simultaneously.

Still two weeks ago – the American-Israeli war against Iran began on February 28 -, around 1.7 million barrels of crude oil per day left the island, most of it destined for China.

An attack on Kharg’s oil infrastructure would have consequences for the rise in oil prices, which on Friday reached the highest value in the last four years.

Since the start of the war, the island has exported 13.7 million barrels of oil.
