Iranians form human chains around power plants, according to local media

Groups of Iranians formed human chains to protect power plants this Tuesday, after threats from President Donald Trump to attack energy infrastructure, while senior officials said they were also willing to sacrifice their lives.

Following an online and text message campaign to sign up for human chains across the country, authorities said more than 14 million people had joined.

It was not possible to immediately verify that number or how many people were participating in the human chains, although the first images showed dozens of people in each location.

State news agency IRNA showed people forming a human chain “in support of power plants” in the southern city of Bushehr, where a nuclear power plant is located.

State television and the Mehr news agency showed dozens of people in front of the main power plant in the northern city of Tabriz, as well as at a plant in the city of Mashhad.

With the attacks of the United States and Israel directed also against bridgesa crowd also gathered at the main bridge over the river in the city of Ahvaz, Mehr reported.

Although the war of more than five weeks has ended an entire echelon of the Iranian leadership, the attacks on energy plants would represent a significant escalation.

The speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, considered by some to be the country’s de facto number one following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at the start of the war, posted a screenshot of what was supposedly the registration system for human chains.

Stating that he had added his name to the list, he added: “Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf is willing to sacrifice his life for Iran.”

Meanwhile, the Persian word for “self-sacrifice” -“janfada” – became a trending hashtag on social media.

“More than 14 million proud Iranians have registered so far to sacrifice their lives to defend Iran. I too have been, am and will continue to be willing to give my life for Iran”President Masud Pezehskian wrote in X.

Trump warned that “an entire civilization will die” in Iran if the country does not meet its midnight deadline to open the Strait of Hormuz.
