Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir confirmed on Thursday that the army failed in its mission to protect the country and its residents on October 7, 2023.
On that day, the Al-Qassam Brigades – the military wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) – attacked military bases and settlements around the Gaza Strip, leading to the killing and capture of Israelis, in response to “the occupation’s daily crimes for decades against the Palestinian people and their sanctities, especially Al-Aqsa Mosque,” according to the movement.
Zamir said in a message marking the two-year anniversary of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” attack according to the Hebrew calendar: “On October 7, the Israeli army failed in its mission to protect the state and its citizens,” according to the Israeli “Wala” news website.
He continued, “Correcting this comes from within, from us. We cannot change what happened, but we can grow, as individuals and as an army, and take responsibility and learn from the past.”
He added, “We are investigating and will continue to investigate the events of that day and the entire war, honestly, transparently and professionally.”
It is noteworthy that many security, political and military officials in Israel considered that the October 7 attack represented a security, intelligence, military and political failure.
While officials resigned because they were responsible for part of this failure, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – wanted by the International Criminal Court for committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip – insists that he bears no responsibility for it, and rejects the opposition’s calls for early elections.
Since October 7, 2023, with American support, Israel has committed genocide in the Gaza Strip that lasted two years, during which 67,938 Palestinians were martyred, and 170,169 others were injured, most of them children and women. It caused widespread destruction in facilities and infrastructure and a famine that claimed the lives of 463 Palestinians, including 157 children.
