Judge releases defendants in Christmas lights corruption investigation

The four defendants arrested in Operation Lumenwhich investigates alleged economic crimes in contracts for the installation of Christmas lights, fare released this Sunday, and the coercive measures will be known on Tuesday, indicated a judicial source.

“The four accused were released because the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) promoted non-custodial coercive measures. In this sense, the criminal investigation judge decided to release them. They will return on Tuesday to the Porto Criminal Investigation Court to learn about the coercive measures”, the source explained to the Lusa news agency.

The same source added that the MP promoted, in the case of the secretary general of the Lisbon Chamber, Alberto Laplaine Guimarães, who is one of the defendants in this case, the suspension of his duties, as well as the ban on going to the municipality’s facilities, or contacting municipal workers and other defendants in the case.

On Tuesday, the Judiciary Police arrested four people suspected of the crimes of active and passive corruption, economic participation in business, abuse of power and criminal association, related to the supply and installation of festive lighting.
