June Lockhart, one of the last living icons from Hollywood’s golden era, has died at the age of 100. The actress, who rose to fame for her roles in television classics ‘Lassie’ and ‘Lost in Space’, died of natural causes in Santa Monica, California. At her side were her daughter June Elizabeth and her granddaughter Christianna.
Lockhart’s career began at a young age when she appeared in a Metropolitan Opera production at the age of eight. She made her film debut in 1938 in ‘A Christmas Carol’ alongside her parents Gene and Kathleen Lockhart. Her portrayal of Ruth Martin in ‘Lassie’ earned her two Emmy nominations before she won audiences’ hearts as Maureen Robinson in ‘Lost in Space’.
Off screen, Lockhart was known for her adventurous spirit. She loved rock ‘n’ roll, driving tanks and flying in hot air balloons. Despite her gentle on-screen roles, she was a woman who sought and lived for adventure. Her passion for space was recognized by NASA in 2014 with the award of the Exceptional Public Achievement Medal.
Lockhart is survived by two daughters, Anne and June Elizabeth, from her marriage to John F. Maloney. The family has requested donations be made to the Actors Fund, ProPublica and International Hearing Dog, Inc. in lieu of flowers. Her funeral will be private to commemorate her remarkable career and fulfilling life.
