In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the last Ebola patient has been released from a treatment center in Kasai province. This news marks a significant step forward in the fight against the latest outbreak, which was declared on September 4th. The World Health Organization (WHO) has now started a 42-day countdown to confirm the end of the outbreak provided there are no new cases.
Since the outbreak began, 64 cases have been recorded, of which 19 patients have successfully recovered. The WHO has counted 53 confirmed and 11 probable cases, with typical symptoms including fever, vomiting and bleeding. Despite the challenges posed by Kasai Province’s remote location, a rapid response and the establishment of a 32-bed treatment center curbed the spread of the virus.
WHO and its partners have played a critical role in combating the outbreak. More than 35,000 people have been vaccinated in the Bulape region, further curbing the spread of the virus. No new cases have been reported since September 25, raising hopes that the outbreak will end soon.
Ebola, first identified in 1976 in what is now DR Congo, has a high mortality rate if left untreated. The largest outbreak occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2016, infecting over 28,000 people and recording more than 11,000 deaths. Recent developments in the DRC show the importance of a rapid and coordinated response to such health crises.
