The Left Bloc called on the Political Commission to analyze the electoral results this Thursday, October 16th, and registered and opposing motions are invited to the next National Convention. The party went from four councilors in 2021 (Almada, Lisbon, Porto, Salvaterra de Magos) to one in 2025, in the case of Carolina Serrão, who joined Alexandra Leitão’s list in Lisbon.
The Bloc also suffered an abrupt drop in municipal deputies, from 94 to 17, including coalitions with Livre in this number. Six municipal deputies on their own lists were elected in Coimbra, Moita, Porto, Torres Novas, Horta and Vila do Porto.
Mariana Mortágua classified the election as “modest” and declared that the coalitions have a “positive balance” and that the “chosen path points to the future.” Still, this same association policy will also be discussed internally, since the party went from two coalitions in 2021 to 22 in 2025.
Andreia Galvão, deputy who replaces Mariana Mortágua in Parliament, characterized on social media as “the Bloc’s worst electoral result” was Sunday’s report, going beyond what the coordinator herself had said.
Ricardo Aires, former councilor in Porto, says he will “step away from politics”, and that “the Bloc will certainly have a huge reflection to do (…), also about its destiny”. Aires lamented the “impossibility of alliances on the left” and added that parties “should be more careful in preserving and supporting those who, independently, give their time and dedication.”
The Famalicão Bloc criticized Livre, which it says had “sinned due to lack of boldness”, while the PAN, for its part, “refused to even meet”, “in an arrogant attitude.” As such, the policy of coalitions across the territory is not peaceful.
Manuel Afonso, from Mesa Nacional, argues that in Lisbon the party should “confront, fracture and mobilize” and not apply itself to a coalition. “My party suffered a great defeat. We have to accept it and change”, he requested on his social pages.
The association with Livre, in particular, will be rethought, not least because the local Bloc candidates argue that Rui Tavares’s party had more preponderance and decision-making power, as a result of greater parliamentary representation.
The four motions against the Directorate lament the difficulty of territorial implementation, some lack of local visibility and emphasize that it is necessary to decentralize and stop relying on the almost exclusive media coverage of the coordinator. Municipal balance sheets are expected to lead to change in the party.
Motion B, DN knows, will not be represented, as he considered that the Political Commissions have been acts of “democratic simulacrum”, words expressed by Ana Sofia Ligeiro.
The meeting will mark the next National Table, which will be held on October 25th or 26th. For this Thursday, the presidential candidacy of Catarina Martins is in the works, already announced by the Board and officially presented in Porto, on Saturday. The motions question the party’s financial capacity to repeat the last two walks it took with Marisa Matias.
