Legal lawyers appointed to mega cases will have access to a tool with “highly complex” procedural information. Called the Electronic Procedural Information Management System (SEGIP), the site already existed, but was not available to these lawyers.
“This digital tool, developed by the CSM itself, allows you to organize and analyze highly complex procedural information, integrating facts, evidence and actors, and facilitating consistent, structured and quick consultation throughout all procedural phases”, reads a joint statement. The document is signed by the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM) and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB):
This access is the result of a reinforcement in “institutional collaboration with the aim of guaranteeing better conditions for action in particularly complex processes, simultaneously ensuring respect for the fundamental right of defense and the regular functioning of the courts”. The partnership takes place amidst the controversy surrounding the Marquês operation.
With a constant change of unofficial lawyers, one of the justifications of professionals who give up defending José Sócrates is that the time for preparation is too short. In general, this period is ten days.
“This collaboration represents a significant step towards ensuring that lawyers appointed unofficially have adequate resources to fully carry out their duties, especially in particularly demanding processes. The availability of SEGIP will contribute decisively to a more effective defense and to a more balanced and functional justice system”, said the president of the OA, João Massano, quoted in the statement.
For the vice-president of the CSM, judge advisor Luís Azevedo Mendes, this availability provides better conditions for the functioning of the courts. “In cases of special complexity, it is essential that everyone involved has instruments that facilitate the organization and analysis of procedural information. Making this tool available to public defenders contributes to creating better conditions for the exercise of the right to defense and for the regular functioning of the courts”, he highlighted.
Since the launch of SEGIP, several districts in the country have been adopting the system. The tool was developed by the council itself, for cases of special complexity.
