The president of the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) of the Leiria Region stated this Tuesday, March 24, that this territory, seriously affected by bad weather almost two months ago, “urgently needs support that has not yet arrived”.
Asked at the end of a CIM meeting, in Leiria, whether there is any guarantee of Government funding for the recovery of the Leiria Region, Jorge Vala responded negatively.
“This is another of the problems that was on the table and under discussion, although the Minister of Economy told us, in a meeting with CIM presidents last week, that, by the end of the month, there will be news about the availability of support for the affected territories”, Jorge Vala told the Lusa agency.
Noting that after the Kristin depression, on January 28, which hit this region, but also municipalities in the district of Santarém, such as Ourém or Ferreira do Zêzere, “mechanisms were activated”, Jorge Vala said that “the municipalities affected by other types of problems were also increasing, namely floods”.
“We have not yet recovered from the storm, it is being very difficult to recover, particularly public buildings, public spaces, for which we urgently need support that has not yet arrived”highlighted Jorge Vala, also mayor of Porto de Mós.
According to the mayor, “neither the amounts nor the duration of this support” are yet known, reiterating that Minister Castro Almeida reported that, “until the end of the month there was some news about this, but there hasn’t been any yet”.
The CIM includes the municipalities of Alvaiázere, Ansião, Batalha, Castanheira de Pera, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Leiria, Marinha Grande, Pedrógão Grande, Pombal and Porto de Mós.
