Macron criticizes Trump for comments about his marriage

“The comments I heard are neither elegant nor appropriate, and they do not deserve a response,” said French President Emmanuel Macron, asked about statements made by his American counterpart, Donald Trump, regarding his marriage.

At a private lunch in Washington on Wednesday (April 1) and amid attacks against NATO allies, Trump went further in his comments by referring to Macron.

In addition to playing with the French accent (it’s not the first time he’s done it), Trump said that the president’s wife, Brigitte Macon treats her husband “extremely badly” and that he is “still recovering from the punch he received in the chin”.

The US president was referring to a video of the couple’s arrival in Vietnam, in May 2025, where Brigitte appears to “slap” her husband as they prepare to leave the plane.

At the time Macron denied any “domestic disagreement”, speaking instead of a “moment of complicity” between the couple.
