Manchester United was reborn in the English Football League, winning at champions Liverpool (2-1), now officially in crisis, on a historic day for Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim, in the eighth round.
This was Manchester United’s first victory at Anfield Road since January 2016 and, for the first time in almost a year at Old Trafford, Amorim achieved two successive victories with the red devils in the Premier League. It was also United’s first away win in the Premier League this season. Liverpool suffered their fourth defeat in a row, third in the championship, and officially entered a crisis under the command of Dutchman Arne Slot.
This Sunday, October 19th, Manchester started with Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes as starters, but it was Cameroonian Bryan Mbeumo who gave United the lead after just two minutes. The Dutch Gakpo equalized the match in the 78th minute and, when Liverpool’s possible comeback was expected, the unloved Maguire gave the victory to red devils, at 84, after a perfect ball from Bruno Fernandes.
“A very important game for us. Winning today, climbing the rankings. We used their impatience to make mistakes. We were very effective. Today is to celebrate. Now it’s about keeping the skies clear in Manchester even if it’s difficult”, said Bruno Fernandes after the match.
With this result, Rúben Amorim’s team joined the group of eighth-placed teams in the Premier League, with 13 points, while Liverpool remains in third, with 15.
Hours earlier, there was also a surprise in London, with Aston Villa preventing Tottenham from rising to second place with a 2-1 victory over the spurs. João Palhinha, back in good form after a difficult season at Bayern Munich, was once again a starter at Tottenham and assisted Uruguayan Bentancur in the fifth minute, but Villa turned around for Rogers, in the 37th minute, and Buendia, in the 77th minute.
Tottenham remains in sixth place with 14 points, while the Birmingham team, which was experiencing a difficult start to the season, rose to 11th place with 12.
