Maria Tomé wins silver in the European Triathlon Cup in Quarteira and records the best result of her career

Maria Tomé won this Saturday the silver medal in the elite women’s race of the European Triathlon Cup in Quarteiracontested at the Olympic distance, achieving the best result of her career in this Portuguese competition, surpassed only by the Belgian Jolien Vermeylen.

The Portuguese triathlete, currently among the best in the world and ranked 22nd in the international rankings, once again confirmed her progress in a race where she had already been third in 2025, fourth in 2022 and fifth in 2021. n

Maria Tomé was part of the leading group from the swimming segment, always remaining among the strongest athletes also in cycling, where a group of 11 triathletes managed to gain an advantage over the pursuers over the 40 kilometers. In the final 10 kilometer race, she followed the future winner in the opening laps, but ended up giving way in the middle part of the course, finishing 19 seconds behind the European champion. Frenchwoman Ilona Hadhoum completed the podium, already more than a minute behind the winner.

Born in Torres Novas and athlete at the Torres Novas Swimming Club, Maria Tomé has established herself as a reference in Portuguese triathlon. In 2024, she made her debut at the Paris Olympic Games, where she finished 11th in the women’s individual event, very close to the Olympic diploma, one of Portugal’s best results in the sport.

Over the last few seasons, he has accumulated relevant results in international competitions, including the silver medal at the under-23 World Championship in 2023 and the world bronze in the same category in 2024, confirming its regular presence among the young elite of world triathlon. She also achieved 14th place in a stage of the World Triathlon Championship Series in Karlovy Vary, a result that helped to consolidate her position among the best athletes on the international circuit.

In Portugal, Maria Tomé is also national champion and one of the central figures of the new generation of women’s triathlon, assuming herself as a natural candidate to star in the next Olympic cycle towards Los Angeles 2028.

In the same race in Quarteira, Mariana Vargem finished in fifth place, making a notable recovery in the running segment, while Madalena Almeida, Matilde Santos and Cassilda Carvalho also completed the competition within the group of the top 30 placed.
