The Darmstadt-based Merck Group recently concluded a significant agreement with the Trump administration that provides for exemption from pharmaceutical tariffs for pharmaceutical products and ingredients from its US subsidiary EMD Serono. This agreement is part of a broader strategy to reduce high drug prices in the United States, which have long been a thorn in the side of President Donald Trump. In return, Merck commits to investing in biopharmaceutical production and research in the USA.
A central component of the agreement is the significant reduction in the costs of in vitro fertilization therapies that EMD Serono will offer in the future. The drugs Gonal-F, Ovidrel and Cetrotide are scheduled to be available from the beginning of 2026 via the planned direct sales company “TrumpRX”. Patients who combine all three therapies can expect an 84 percent discount off list prices. This initiative aims to support more than ten million American women with unfulfilled desire to have children.
The US market is enormously important for Merck, as the group generates annual sales of around 1.8 billion euros in North America. Merck boss Belen Garijo emphasized the company’s strong presence in the USA and the intention to further expand this through the local production of fertility drugs. Merck is a leading manufacturer of fertility drugs and achieved billions in sales in this area in 2024.
The pharmaceutical industry is under increasing pressure from the Trump administration, which has repeatedly called for price cuts. In addition to Merck, other pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca and Pfizer have also concluded similar agreements. Trump recently threatened pharmaceutical tariffs of 100 percent on branded and patented drugs, which prompted the industry to quickly negotiate. The EU is spared from these tariffs; a tariff of 15 percent continues to be levied on EU imports.
