Meta, the company behind Facebook, has announced that it will cut about 600 jobs at its superintelligence lab as part of a major restructuring. This decision was communicated by Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, in an internal memo to employees. The move is in line with Meta’s strategy to increase efficiency and speed up decision-making processes by reducing team size.
The job cuts come at a time when Meta, along with other major technology companies such as OpenAI and Google, is working hard to develop the most powerful AI systems. Despite the layoffs, Meta has poached numerous researchers from competitors in recent months by offering attractive salary packages. However, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, commented that none of OpenAI’s top talent had moved to Meta.
The decision to reduce the team size is intended to result in less coordination being needed to make decisions and each employee having more responsibility and influence, according to Wang.
