This Monday, October 20, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumstated that his government continues in the urgent care phase after the rains and floods in eastern and central states of the country, which have left 76 dead. Likewise, the President announced that she is already preparing a national reconstruction plan in which 10 billion pesos (10 billion pesos) will be invested.
“The first estimate is 10 billion pesos of direct support to people, to recover schools, clinics, employment, building the future. All of this is going to take about 10 billion. There are resources (…) to address the emergency,” assured Sheinbaum during “La Mañanera del pueblo” early.
The Mexican Governor assured that they continue working to address the emergency, “there are still communities, localities that do not have the land crossing and we continue working, cleaning the homes and guaranteeing the recovery of communication,” she noted.
He detailed that More than 52 thousand people participate in relief efforts between the Armed Forces, the Federal Government, state authorities and volunteers.
Claudia Sheinbaum explained that the official strategy is made up of four axes:
- Emergency attention
- Direct support to affected families
- Reconstruction
- Strengthening the risk warning and prevention system
“It is not only about cleaning the roads or having provisional access to the bridges. We have to rebuild bridges, rebuild roads, rebuild clinics, rebuild schools (…) and finally also the reconstruction of the economic activity of the localities,” he stressed.
The President announced actions to improve forecasting and early warning systems, through a scientific committee with specialists from various universities in the country.
“It is about not only that the national weather warning reaches the governors’ offices (…) but also that through the cell phone, just as we already have it for earthquakes, direct warning can reach the communities”, said.
Sheinbaum announced that in the coming days the census of victims and the economic support plan for affected families will be presented.

For her part, Ariadna Montiel, head of the Secretary of Welfaredetailed support after the rains: 20 thousand pesos affected; up to 50 thousand pesos to businesses; between 50 thousand and 100 thousand pesos for fields and livestock; 150 pesos in school supplies; and 500 thousand pesos for reconstruction of clinics
While Jesús Esteva Medina, Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation of Mexico (SICT), pointed out that “From October 14 to 20, of the 288 cut-off communities, as of today, progress has been made with 169,” that is, 119 remain to be repaired.
Finally, director of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE)Emilia Calleja, assured that the electricity supply is 98.7% restored in the impacted region, although damage persists in rural areas.
