REDMOND / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows 10, leaving millions of users worldwide in a precarious security situation. Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows 10, meaning the operating system will no longer receive free security updates. This decision affects all editions of Windows 10, from Home to Workstations. While the system continues to function, newly discovered vulnerabilities remain unpatched, making machines easy targets for malware and ransomware attacks.
Security experts strongly warn that hackers often collect vulnerabilities in popular software and only strike when support ends. This makes the systems virtually defenseless against attacks. For users whose hardware does not meet the strict requirements of Windows 11, Microsoft offers paid Extended Security Updates (ESU). Private users can purchase an additional year of protection until October 2026 for $30, while companies will have to bear significantly higher costs.
Although Windows 11 now has more market share, over 40 percent of users still use Windows 10. Many functioning computers do not meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11, such as the TPM 2.0 security chip. Consumer advocates sharply criticize this policy and fear a wave of electronic waste as millions of users have to dispose of usable hardware. The environmental impact is enormous and the financial pressure on consumers is unfair.
The parallels with the end of Windows 7 are disturbing. Back then, unpatched systems led to attacks like WannaCry, which caused billions of dollars in damage worldwide. Users now have the choice between upgrading hardware, purchasing expensive security updates, or taking massive risks with unprotected systems. Experts unanimously advise against the latter, as it opens the door to hackers.
