Microsoft Teams is planning a major change that could impact the way many employees work. Starting in December 2025, a new feature will be introduced that monitors employee location by leveraging connection to office Wi-Fi networks. This feature could significantly limit the flexibility of working from home as it allows employers to verify the actual location of their employees.
According to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, the new feature will automatically determine a user’s work location as soon as they connect to the company’s Wi-Fi network. This could be done by detecting the IP address or MAC address of the router. This feature will be disabled by default, but administrators can decide whether to enable it and whether users must opt-in.
This development is reminiscent of similar measures that companies like Amazon took after the pandemic to bring employees back to the office. Some employees tried to configure their home networks to look like the corporate networks to avoid monitoring. However, Microsoft’s approach could leverage more advanced location tracking methods that render such tricks ineffective.
The introduction of this feature could have a far-reaching impact on work culture, especially at a time when many companies are encouraging flexible work models. It remains to be seen how companies and employees will react to this new way of location monitoring and whether this could lead to a return to more traditional working models.
