The Minister of Internal Administration is traveling the country to listen and learn “in a personal way” about the difficulties and “concrete needs” of volunteer firefighters, considering that “proximity is essential” for a future decision.
According to a note published this Wednesday, March 18, on the Government’s website, Luís Neves began on Tuesday what he calls a “proximity route with firefighters” by visiting firefighters from Oleiros (Castelo Branco), Soure (Coimbra) and Leiria, in an initiative that aims to “strengthen direct dialogue with federations and fire departments”.
With these contacts, the minister intends to prioritize “direct listening to firefighters” and “get to know, on a personal level, the difficulties, operational challenges and concrete needs of humanitarian associations”says the note, highlighting that Luís Neves considers that “public policies in the area of protection and relief must be built based on the experience of those on the ground”.
For minister Luís Neves, “proximity is essential for a fairer and more informed decision”thus intending “listen to the people who lead every day, who feel the resources, the teams and the difficulties on the ground”.
“The initiative comes in a particularly demanding context for the protection and relief system, marked by the increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather phenomena and the increasing complexity of the missions assigned to firefighters”he notes.
The Special Rural Fire Fighting Device for this year is “in more means, greater response capacity and better coordination between entities”advance.
