Motorcycle collision leaves one dead and one seriously injured

A 38-year-old man died and another, 25, suffered serious injuries in a collision between two motorcycles that occurred this SaturdayMarch 14, on a dirt road in the municipality of Crato, district of Portalegre, Civil Protection announced.

The Alto Alentejo Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command told the Lusa agency that the accident, for which an alert was given at 12:12, occurred in the Vale do Peso area, where an off-road motorcycle race was taking place.

According to the same source, the 38-year-old man was declared dead at the scene of the accident by the doctor in the emergency and resuscitation medical vehicle (VMER).

Already the seriously injured person was transported in a helicopter from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) from the accident site to a football field, from where he would be transferred by ambulance to a hospital in the Lisbon areahe added.

Contacted by Lusa, a source from the organization of the GáfeTTe off-road motorcycle race said that the accident occurred off the trackhighlighting that one of the two motorcyclists involved in the accident was going to participate in the competition.

The relief operations mobilized a total of 20 operatives from the fire brigades of Crato, Nisa and Alter do Chão, GNR and INEM, supported by eight vehicles, including the VMER from Castelo Branco and the Immediate Life Support ambulance (SIV) from Ponte de Sor, and a helicopter.
