Municipalities ready to support newspaper distribution in Portugal

The president of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) guaranteed this Wednesday, March 18, that municipalities are available to be “part of the solution” in the support model for press distribution and sales.

“Portuguese municipalities are concerned [com a distribuição de jornais pelo país] because we defend that all citizens, in any part of our territory, should have access to the written press”, said Pedro Pimpão.

Speaking to journalists, at the end of a meeting of the ANMP Board of Directors that took place at Porto City Hall, the mayor pointed out that Portuguese municipalities are available to be part of the solution and to create opportunities for all Portuguese people to have a written press in their territories.

“We are aligned with all support mechanisms for newspaper distribution and support for points of sale”, he highlighted.

Pedro Pimpão, who also assumes leadership of Pombal City Hall, highlighted that newspaper sales outlets, particularly in small towns and low-density areas, deserve “special attention” from the State.

“And we are also willing to help”, he stressed.

The government proposes a support model for press distribution and sales with two pillars, lasting three years and total funding of 3.5 million euros.

In pillar I, which concerns distribution support, this will be awarded through an international public tender, divided into two territorial lots: lot 1 concerns the North and Center and lot 2 the West and Tagus Valley, Greater Lisbon, Setúbal Peninsula, Alentejo and Algarve.
