This Sunday, April 12th, the Serra da Estrela Ice Arena hosts the biggest edition of the National Figure Skating Championship ever, with 43 athletes competing, in a clear sign of the sustained growth of the sport in Portugal.
Organized by the São Paulo Winter Sports Federation, the race takes place from 3pm, with the awards ceremony scheduled for 7:30pm, bringing together participants from various categories, between Pre-Initiate and Elite, as well as intermediate and adult categories. On the track will be athletes from Ice Clube da Covilhã, Revolution Figure Skating and individual competitors.
One of the most notable moments of this year’s edition will be the debut of the doubles category, present for the first time in the national championship, in a step considered relevant for the technical development of the discipline in Portugal.
Among the names highlighted is Diogo Craveiro, vice-world champion in figure skating, whose presence reinforces the competitive level and the growing interest surrounding the event.
The 2026 edition follows a year of affirmation of new talents, with several national champions emerging at different levels, in a context of expanding the base of practitioners and greater visibility of the sport.
For Pedro Flávio, president of the Winter Sports Federation-Portugal (FDI-Portugal), “this competition is a decisive moment for the consolidation and sustained growth of the sport in Portugal”, highlighting, in statements to the FDI-Portugal media, that the increase in the number of participants reflects “the growing interest in figure skating in our country”.
The director also highlights the role of the championship as a platform for valuing athletes and bringing them closer to the public, at a time when the federation seeks to reinforce the sport’s projection at a national level.
The competition will be broadcast live on the federation’s official YouTube channel throughout Sunday afternoon.
