Macalester College’s MacNest program offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of startups and gain valuable experience. Neel Thakurdas, a business and data science student, took this opportunity to gain his first business experience at Print Profit, an emerging software startup. Through his work at Print Profit, Thakurdas was able to not only expand his skills in pricing strategy and market research, but also secure his first business deal of his own.
Inspired by the movie “Moneyball,” Print Profit uses data analytics to revolutionize profitability in the printing industry. Thakurdas was enthusiastic about the company’s vision from the start and worked closely with founder Nick Gawreluk. This collaboration enabled him to design his projects flexibly while contributing to the company’s success.
A key part of his work was developing a new sales outreach system, which proved more challenging than expected. Despite initial difficulties, Thakurdas managed to manage over 2,000 contacts and eventually closed his first business deal. This experience taught him that the path to success in the startup world is both challenging and attainable.
Erik Halaas, program manager for Macalester’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Department, sees stories like Neel Thakurdas’s at the core of what MacNest wants to achieve. The program offers students the opportunity to experience first-hand the reality of starting a business and develop the skills necessary to turn their own business ideas into reality.
