Lowville, NY – A Lowville clerk was arrested after he brought a handgun to village offices but did not have a valid handgun permit, troopers said.
Paul A. Denise, 56, of Lowville, brought a Heckler & Koch P2000SK handgun to the offices Jan. 2, according to Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a state police spokeswoman.
Denise is the village’s superintendent of public works as of 2020. He earned $80,173 in 2025, according to online salary records.
The gun was acquired by Denise from a family member who gave it to him for safekeeping while they were out of the country, Jiron said. Denise displayed the gun during a conversation with co-workers.
According to her, Denise did not have a valid permit to carry a handgun in New York State. He voluntarily handed over the weapon to the soldiers.
On Thursday, Denise was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable at Lowville Court on March 5.
Lowville Mayor Danny Salmon said the township council will cooperate fully with the investigation, but has not commented on the incident because it is a personnel matter, according to a news release.
