Orbán and Péter Magyar have already voted on a day of record participation and a possible end of an era

The Tisza party said it had received around 60 complaints on its website about alleged irregularities committed by supporters of Orbán’s Fidesz, while Fidesz MEP Csaba Domotor said his party had a record of 639 cases of electoral irregularities and that there were 74 police complaints pending.

Voting intention polls give Magyar a clear advantagealthough the particularities of the Hungarian electoral system, reformed several times since 2011 to benefit Fidesz, do not exclude the possibility of a majority of seats for Orbán.

A group of activists from the civic movement AHang (The Voice) waited for Orbán in front of the school where he voted with a large sign in the shape of a boarding pass for a Budapest-Moscow flight, departing this evening, alluding to the prime minister’s close relations with Russia.

Due to Orbán’s importance to the ultraconservative populist movement, the Hungarian elections are closely watched, both by his supporters and his critics, including Ukraine and the European Union, with whom the Magyar leader has been in conflict for years.

Both North American President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin support Orbán, along with numerous leaders of the European far right, such as France’s Marine Le Pen or Spain’s Santiago Abascal, among others.

The voting tables will remain open until 7pm local time (6pm in Lisbon) and the first relevant results are expected after 10pm in Hungary.
