The essential food basket now costs 257.95 euros, an increase of 2.95 euros compared to the previous week. The price of the 63 food products monitored by Deco Proteste reached the “highest value ever”, since the organization began this analysis, in 2022. Four years ago it was possible to buy the same basket for 70.25 euros less (37.42%), he says.

In the last week, Between April 1 and 8, the cost of spaghetti pasta increased by 24%, to 1.18 euros, the price of spiral pasta increased by 18%, to 1.37 euros, and tuna put in vegetable oil increased by 16%, to 1.65 euros. According to Deco Proteste, these “were the products that increased in price the most in percentage terms”.

Compared to the same period last yearDeco Proteste concludes that the biggest percentage increase in price was seen in products such as horse mackerel (55%, now costing 6.40 euros), kale (49%, currently at 2.12 euros) and broccoli (42%, which is reflected in a cost of 3.71 euros).

Since the beginning of this analysis by Deco Proteste, on January 5, 2022, days before the start of the war in Ukraine, the biggest percentage increases were those of beef for cooking (124% to 13.03 euros/kg), cabbage (113% to 2.12 euros/kg) and eggs (84% to 2.10 euros).

The basket monitored by Deco Proteste includes meat, frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, groceries and fish, with products such as turkey, chicken, mackerel, hake, onion, potato, carrot, banana, apple, orange, rice, spaghetti, sugar, ham, milk, cheese and butter being considered essential, among others.
