Pedro Duarte demands compensation for the North: ‘Region grossly neglected’

The mayor of Porto, Pedro Duarte, said this Monday, March 16, that “the time has come” for the Government to compensate the North region, which has been “grossly neglected or forgotten” over the last few decades by the central government.

“The time has come to compensate this region [Norte] which has been grossly overlooked or even forgotten over the last few decades by a central, centralized power – the most centralized in Europe – which has been an obstacle, a blockage, an enemy to the development of social justice, well-being and equal opportunities”, he said.

The mayor, who assumed leadership of the municipality in the last legislative elections, was talking about the PSD/CDS-PP Government’s decision to create a working group to analyze the expansion of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, in Maia, Porto district.

At the airport’s 80th anniversary ceremony, where the Prime Minister, Pedro Duarte, was present, welcoming the creation of the working group, he considered that the expansion and reinforcement of the airport will be essential to support exporting companies, universities, research centers, business and cultural tourism and to ensure that talent, investment and innovation find conditions in the region to settle and prosper.
