Wine production in Germany will experience a significant decline in 2025, marking the lowest harvest in 15 years. At just 7.3 million hectoliters, production is well below expectations and represents a decline of 7 percent compared to the previous year. This development is surprising, as the Federal Statistical Office had originally made a more optimistic forecast of 8.2 million hectoliters.

The four largest wine-growing regions in Germany are particularly affected: Rheinhessen, Palatinate, Baden and Württemberg. In Rheinhessen, heavy rainfall in September led to a harvest loss of 23 percent compared to the average of the last ten years. The Palatinate, Baden and Württemberg also recorded significant losses of 18, 15 and 22 percent. These declines are due to the climatic conditions and the associated intensive grape selection.

Despite the challenges in these regions, there are also positive developments. Areas such as Saxony, Saale-Unstrut and Ahr, which suffered from late frost damage last year, are benefiting from encouraging harvest increases. Some of these regions are reporting triple-digit percentage increases, indicating recovery and adaptation to climatic conditions.

The German wine industry is optimistic about the quality of the wines. The high ripeness of the grapes promises excellent vintages with intense aromas. Smaller berries contribute to a higher concentration of aroma, resulting in fruity and intense wines. This development could steer German viticulture in a positive direction despite the low harvest volume by placing the quality of the wines in the foreground.
