Portugal secured first place in Group B of the Montreux Tournament (Nations Cup) by beating Spain this Friday, April 3, 5-4, in an intense encounter that was decided only in the final moments. With this triumph, the national team ensures its presence in the semi-finals of the competition, where it will face Argentina, second in Group A.
The team led by Reinaldo Ventura started the match better and took the lead after 13 minutes, through Carlos Ramos. However, the Spanish reaction came even before the break: Pol Manrubia restored equality in the 17th minute and Nil Roca, in a situation of numerical superiority, completed the turnaround shortly afterwards, putting Spain ahead at rest.
In the second half, Portugal presented a firm and effective response. Hélder Nunes equalized with two goals and, shortly afterwards, scored again, putting the team back in front. Gonçalo Alves extended it to 4-2,reinforcing Portuguese superiority at a stage in which the team controlled the game.
Spain also reduced through Martí Casas, relaunching uncertainty in the outcome. Near the end, Gonçalo Alves scored again and made it 5-3, giving greater tranquility to the Portuguese formation. Even soGuillem Jansà reduced it from a penalty in the final seconds, making the score 5-4.
With three wins in as many games in the group stage, Portugal finishes in first place and confirms their qualification for the semi-finals, where they will face Argentina. Spain, second in the group, will discuss access to the final with Italy.
