Portugal draws 0-0 with Mexico as Azteca Stadium reopens ahead of 2026 World Cup

On Saturday, March 28, Portugal drew 0-0 against Mexico, in a preparatory game for the 2026 Football World Cup, held in Mexico City, in a match marked by the reopening of the mythical Azteca Stadium.

With many changes in the usual ‘eleven’ and Cristiano Ronaldo absent, the Portuguese team did not go beyond a draw, but maintained their unbeaten record against the Mexicans, going on to record three draws and three wins in the six games played.

The game was also marred by the death of a fan before the starting whistle, after falling from the stadium’s box area.

The Portuguese team, coached by Spaniard Roberto Martínez, will now play against the United States, in Atlanta, in a new friendly match, scheduled for Tuesday.

At the World Cup 2026, which will take place from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Portugal is included in Group K, along with Uzbekistan, Colombia and an opponent yet to be defined, who will emerge from the intercontinental play-off between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Jamaica.
