Portugal pays tribute to police officers who died in the line of duty

Anyone who passes in front of the equestrian statue of D. José I, in Praça do Comércio, in Lisbon, will see blue lighting. On the nights of this Friday, March 6th, and Saturday, March 7th, from 6:45 pm, the place will be illuminated to symbolically honor security agents who died on duty.

The tribute, titled Remembering Fallen Officersis from Interpol, which Portugal joins in this initiative of an international character. “Each loss in service impacts families, institutions and the safety of communities. We would like to acknowledge all security forces professionals who, day after day, are committed to ensuring the safety and protection of citizens”, highlights a joint statement sent to newsrooms.

Security forces highlight two recent deaths of professionals who “they lost their lives while carrying out their duty”. One of them is the GNR corporal Pedro Manata e Silva50 years old, who died when the boat he was traveling in was rammed by a high-speed boat linked to drug trafficking.

The other is the main guard Válter Canastreirovictim of an accident in Ribeira de Caia during storm Kristin, during a population support service. The professional performed this service voluntarily during his rest period.

In Portugal, the national coordination of the initiative is ensured by the INTERPOL National Office (NCB Lisbon)integrated not Internal Security System. The initiative also counts on the involvement of Public Security Police (PSP)yes Republican National Guard (GNR) and from Judicial Police (PJ)as well as with the support of Lisbon City Council (CML).
