Portugal reaches 79% renewable electricity and is 3rd in the EU

Renewable sources produced 79% of the electricity generated in mainland Portugal in January and February, reveals this Wednesday, 18th, the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (Apren), positioning the country as the third in Europe with the highest renewable incorporation.

In the bulletin for February, Apren indicates that, between February 1st and 28th, 77.3% of the electricity produced came from renewable sources — corresponding to 4,000 GWh out of a total of 5,175 GWh. Only Norway (96.2%) and Denmark (90.7%) recorded higher percentages in the period considered.

Hydrography was the main source of generation in February, representing 37.2% of the total, followed by wind energy with 31.3% and solar photovoltaic energy with 5.2%. Compared to February 2025, national electrical production grew 20.1%, driven mainly by an increase of 716 GWh in wind production.

In the market, the average price of the Iberian Electricity Market (Mibel) stood at 5.1 euros/MWh in February and 42.4 euros/MWh in January and February — a drop of 58.5% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Apren also highlights the economic impact associated with greater renewable penetration: in February alone the country avoided spending estimated at R$48.8 million on the import of natural gas, R$101 million on the import of electricity and R$44 million on the purchase of CO2 emission licenses.

At the end of the first month of the year, renewables represented around 81% of installed power in Portugal.
