The public tender was launched for the construction of the Multiúsos Pier of the Port of Praia da Vitória, on the island of Terceira, in the Azores, with a base price of 40.3 million euros.
The announcement, published in Diário da República by Portos dos Açores, establishes a execution period of 36 months, with applications open until 11:59 pm on November 9th.
The construction of the pier is a “long-standing demand” of the Island Council, aiming to meet the growing demand for cruise ships and provide adequate space for loading and unloading goods.
In October, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action of the Azores approved a “favorable conditioned” Environmental Impact Statement for the work, which is still in the preliminary study phase. The project, promoted by Portos dos Açores, aims to increase the port’s operational capacity.
During the Environmental Impact Assessment, alternative solutions were analyzed, and the one that generates the least negative impact was chosen. The order also highlights that deepening the rotation basin should only be considered after robust studies that prove its need.
The conditions imposed include the analysis of the characteristics of the sediments to be dredged, the carrying out of archaeological prospecting dives and the presentation of an archaeological monitoring program approved by the Regional Directorate of Culture. A socioeconomic study on the impacts on local activities, such as fishing and tourism, is also required.
