French biotech startup Nutropy recently closed an $8.1 million funding round to further develop its innovative precision fermented milk proteins. These proteins are identical to the caseins found in cow’s milk and allow the production of cheese alternatives that are similar in taste, texture and nutritional value to real cheese products.
Nutropy was founded by Nathalie Rolland and Dr. Maya Bendifallah and specializes in the production of milk proteins through precision fermentation. This technology offers a sustainable solution to the increasing demand for dairy products as the number of dairy farmers worldwide declines. According to forecasts, there could be a shortage of 30 million tons of milk by 2030, which Nutropy hopes to bridge with its products.
The latest funding round was led by Big Pi Ventures and Zero Carbon Capital, with participation from investors including Saudi Arabia’s Beta Lab, Wyngate, cheese producer Paul Dischamp and Desai Ventures. With these funds, Nutropy plans to expand its production capacity and deliver larger samples to food manufacturers. The company aims to commercially launch its products in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East by 2027.
Nutropy’s technology could play a significant role in the future of cheese production, especially as many plant-based alternatives such as vegan cheese have struggled to win over consumers. Through precision fermented milk proteins that mimic the properties of real cheese, Nutropy could fill a gap in the market while contributing to sustainability in food production.
Nutropy’s vision is to provide a sustainable and future-oriented solution for the global food industry. With the support of investors and the planned expansion into international markets, the company could take a pioneering role in the development of animal-free dairy products.
