Protesters against the use of the Lajes Base in the war in Iran

In the manifesto, they claim that the attack by the United States and Israel on Iran, last Saturday, “was carried out without international legal legitimacy, is unjustifiable and worsens a conflict that is already causing large-scale civilian casualties.”

“What we know is that the recent attack hit a school, causing the death of more than a hundred children, and any response that further worsens civilian suffering is morally unacceptable. The only responsible and sustainable solution is to immediately cease the intensification of the conflict, guarantee the protection of civilian populations and resume diplomatic paths”, read the spokesperson.

The protesters also question “the inconsistency of the position” of the Portuguese Government and “the lack of clarification regarding the purpose of the flights on February 27th and the communications recorded on February 28th”.

“We are here to say that if there are doubts regarding the purposes of use, automatic authorizations should not be given without the need for a response”, highlighted Laura Alves.

Shortly after the demonstration ended, two North American Air Force C-130 planes, normally used to transport troops and cargo, took off from Lajes Base.

The 15 KC-46 Pegasus refueling planes, parked in Lajes since February 18th, are on the ground for now, but since the 27th they have been going out on missions.

Sunday and Monday were the busiest days, but every day at least seven of these aircraft took off, which have the capacity to refuel military planes in mid-flight.

These planes are believed to be being used to refuel US military aircraft traveling between the United States and the Middle East and back, including B1 and B2 bombers that the Americans have already admitted to using in this attack.
