PSP and GNR record 18 deaths, more than two thousand accidents and hundreds of arrests

Until this Sunday, April 5, the PSP and GNR’s Easter 2026 operations recorded 18 deaths, in more than two thousand accidents, which resulted in 42 serious injuries and 668 minor injuries.

In the period between midnight on Thursday and 11:59 pm on Saturday, as part of Operation “Easter 2026”, the Republican National Guard (GNR) recorded a total of 584 accidents, resulting in 12 fatalities, 22 serious injuries and 164 minor injuries.

According to the GNR note, which provides provisional data from the operation, 22,022 drivers were inspected, with 199 people arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l, and 59 for driving without a legal license;

This military force detected 3,619 traffic violations, including 669 for speeding, 649 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection and 97 for excess alcohol.

148 infractions were also recorded for lack of mandatory civil liability insurance and 131 for lack or incorrect use of seat belts and/or child restraint systems (CRS), 129 for improper use of a cell phone while driving.

In relation to accidents with fatalities, on Saturday there were two deaths following collisions: on EN 13, in the town of Afife, in the district of Viana do Castelo, between a motorcycle and a light vehicle, which caused the death of a 58-year-old man and on EN 125, in Luz de Tavira, in the district of Faro, between a moped and a light vehicle, which caused the death of a 63-year-old man.

In its operation “Police Always Present: Safe Easter 2026”, the PSP made 952 arrestsof which 548 were for road crimes, 305 for driving a vehicle while drunk and 184 for lack of legal driving license.

According to the note, 67 suspects were arrested for crimes against property (theft, robbery and fraud) and 102 for drug trafficking, with more than 11,871 individual doses of drugs seized.

In the same period, 363 incidents of domestic violence were recorded, with 17 suspects arrested for committing this serious crime.

As part of prevention and road inspection actions, inspections were carried out 15,671 drivers and 40,844 vehicles controlled by radar, highlighting, in addition to the 548 arrests for traffic crimes, the registration of 4,376 infraction notices, the majority for speeding (614), lack of mandatory periodic inspection (513), and lack of civil liability insurance (241), among others.

In relation to road accidents, in the same period the PSP recorded 1424 accidents, resulting in 524 injuries (20 serious injuries and 504 minor injuries) and six recorded deaths in a collision on the 27th, in the municipality of Sintra; in a run over on Thursday, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia; in a raid on Friday, in the municipality of Almada; and on Saturday in a collision in the municipality of Torres Novas, and two crashes, in the municipality of Santarém and in the municipality of Santana, Autonomous Region of Madeira.
