Ratinho Junior, from PSD, informed, this Monday, 23, that he decided to complete his term as governor of Paraná until December 2026 and, with that, give up his pre-candidacy for the presidency of Brazil.
The elections are only on the 4th and 25th of October but, according to the law, public office holders must withdraw six months beforehand – in this case by the 4th of April – to be able to run, which is why Brazilian politics is already in turmoil.
As Ratinho Júnior’s name was the one that scored best in the polls among center-right candidates, the so-called third way to Lula da Silva, current president, and Flávio Bolsonaro, senator and son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, the announcement fell like a bomb in Brazilian politics.
The latest news reported that Ratinho, as he was ahead in the polls among the moderate right, with 7%, would be declared at the end of the month a candidate for the PSD, a party that has three presidential candidates, with Ronaldo Caiado, governor of Goiás, as vice candidate.
This leaves Caiado, 4% in the polls, and Eduardo Leite, 3%, governor of Rio Grande do Sul, as candidates for candidates in the formation.
In parallel, it was reported that Romeu Zema, another presidential candidate but governor of Minas Gerais and from the Novo party, could migrate to the PSD. Which leaves everything open – and even more confusing – for now in the “third way”.
According to a statement released by Ratinho’s press office, the decision was taken on Sunday night, “after deep reflection with the family”.
The statement also states that the governor of Paraná will continue to be available to the PSD “to help Brazil turn the page on its backwardness, create more optimistic perspectives for young people, be unlocked with less bureaucracy, tighten criminal laws and have Brazilian agribusiness as an asset in the global competition between nations”.
