Reflections on Intolerance and Security

The attack that occurred last Saturday, during a Pro-Life demonstration, constitutes a worrying sign of the state of public debate in Portugal. Regardless of the ideological convictions present, violence can never be tolerated as an instrument of political intervention. When citizens gather peacefully to express a position, it is up to the State to guarantee their security without ambiguity.

The statements by the Minister of Internal Administration sought to convey serenity, highlighting that the authorities are investigating what happened and that there will be no complacency with acts of this nature. Even so, there was a feeling of some hesitation in the clear and unequivocal political condemnation of the attack, as if the ideological context of the targets could relativize the seriousness of the facts.

It cannot. And the attacker going free is also a cause for perplexity.

Partisan reactions also revealed a well-known pattern: firm condemnations on one side, embarrassed silence or excessively cautious statements on the other. This asymmetry weakens the democratic space. Political violence must be repudiated with equal vehemence, without depending on who the victims are or what the causes under debate are.

This episode raises essential questions about the authority of the State, the neutrality of institutions and the growing intolerance in public space. This is not just an isolated case, but a symptom of an environment where pluralism is increasingly difficult to exercise without fear.

Over the decades, Portugal has built a democracy based on freedom of expression and coexistence across differences. Allowing this foundation to erode, whether through action or omission, is paving the way for radicalization that serves no one. Combating political violence requires firmness, coherence and, above all, political courage to affirm principles, even when they are uncomfortable in the eyes of some.
